Microsoft is taking a big step by adding an ad blocker to its Edge browser.

UPDATE:A previous version of this article stated implied that Microsoft was building its own ad blocker. Microsoft has since clarified this is not the case.

Microsoft has announced that it expects to have ad blocking support in the next version of its Edge browser, according to ZDNet.

Users of Microsoft Edge will be able to use ad blocking extensions like Adblock Plus and Adblock, which are popular on other browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

The Edge browser is Microsoft's replacement for Internet Explorer, which is slowly being phased out.

Microsoft reportedly revealed the feature at the Build conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, during a session called "Microsoft Edge: What's Next for Microsoft's New Browser and Web Platform."

The ad blocking feature was point four on a list that also included providing an extension/plugin store and integrating the Bing translator into the browser.

Ad blocking is gradually becoming more mainstream. Microsoft follows Opera, which announced in March that its desktop browser would come with native ad-blocking features.
