Mount Union joins cooperative for master in social justice
ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union and Methodist Theological School in Ohio have created an opportunity for students who wish to pursue a master of social justice degree.
Under this program, interested students will complete a minor in peacebuilding and social justice or the self-defined major in social justice and diversity studies. In their first three years, students will be enrolled full-time at Mount Union. Their fourth undergraduate/first graduate year will be completed at MTSO.
“The 3+2 MA in Social Justice partnership between Mount Union and the Methodist Theological School in Ohio creates a pathway and an outlet for young people who are called to the work of social change-making,” said Dr. Nicole Johnson, professor of religious studies and chair of the Department of Justice, Diversity, and Interdisciplinary Studies at Mount Union. “The partnership emphasizes individualized advising and plenty of experiential learning, both of which are important for helping students determine areas of social concern they wish to address during their five years in the program and beyond in their chosen career. We are excited to offer this unique opportunity to the up-and-coming generation of social justice advocates and peacebuilders.”
Once admitted to Mount Union, students must complete a set of required courses to be eligible for the program. In addition, students must be in good standing with Mount Union and satisfy the admission requirements between MTSO and Mount Union. These requirements include a declaration of intent to pursue the 3+2 program prior to earning 60 semester hours, an application to MTSO by Feb. 1 of the student’s anticipated final year at Mount Union and an undergraduate grade-point average of 3.0.
“The College of Arts and Humanities is committed to helping our students develop a mindset of compassion, intellectual curiosity and engagement,” said Heather Duda, Founding Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. “Because of its focus on preparing graduates to tackle social challenges and lead advocacy efforts, the 3+2 BA/MASJ program fits within this commitment. Together, our two institutions are preparing students for fulfilling lives, meaningful work and responsible citizenship.”
