The Nanoco Group (LON:NANO) Share Price Has Gained 206%, So Why Not Pay It Some Attention?

In this article:

Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Nanoco Group plc (LON:NANO) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 206%. On top of that, the share price is up 69% in about a quarter. The company reported its financial results recently; you can catch up on the latest numbers by reading our company report. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 40% in the last three years.

Because Nanoco Group made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last year Nanoco Group saw its revenue shrink by 70%. So we would not have expected the share price to rise 206%. This is a good example of how buyers can push up prices even before the fundamental metrics show much growth. Of course, it could be that the market expected this revenue drop.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Nanoco Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 206% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 6% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 5 warning signs for Nanoco Group (1 is a bit concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
