WISCONSIN RAPIDS – PetSmart will open at the former Shopko building in Wisconsin Rapids.

The national retailer will join Harbor Freight and Five Below, which have already opened at the site, as well as Marshalls, which is scheduled to open this spring.

Tom Richards, a partner with Cool Investment LLC − an Arizona-based business that purchased the Shopko building and lot − told the Daily Tribune PetSmart has officially signed the lease and plans to open this fall, offering grooming and veterinary services.

According to the PetSmart website, the national chain also offers a pet hotel service, Doggie Day Camp and dog training services, along with supplies, medicines, treats and food for dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles and other small pets.

Redevelopment has been in the works at the former Shopko site since April 2022 when Cool Investment LLC purchased the building and parking lot. In March 2023, Big Lots, Marshalls, Harbor Freight and Five Below were announced as the four tenants that would fill the former department store.

Since that announcement, Harbor Freight opened July 11 and Five Below opened with its grand opening celebration Nov. 10. Marshalls told the Daily Tribune it expects to open this spring. In November, Richards confirmed Big Lots would no longer open at the site and would instead be replaced by a national retailer.

Two more developments will open at the edge of the parking lot, as well.

TWAS Properties will build a Tidal Wave Auto Spa car wash on the edge of the parking lot near the existing Sudzee Car Wash. Last year, a Tidal Wave spokesperson told the Daily Tribune the company would start construction this spring and would open late in 2024. As of last week, Josh Henderson, a marketing representative for Tidal Wave, told the Daily Tribune with the amount of construction projects Tidal Wave has in the works, the Wisconsin Rapids location has been moved to open in 2025.

Valvoline Instant Oil Change will also build along the edge of the parking lot, on the corner of 12th Street South and East Riverview Expressway. The roughly 2,000-square-foot building will likely open this year.
