NY Fed's Williams says it could be reasonable for taper to finish by mid-2022

Sept 27 (Reuters) - It may be possible for the Federal Reserve to finish winding down its asset purchases by the middle of next year but the exact timing has not been decided yet, New York Fed Bank President John Williams said on Monday.

"Assuming the economic conditions support the beginning of a taper soon, then there is a way to do this that I think would not disrupt markets at all and be relatively smooth and be done by the middle of next year," Williams told reporters after speaking during a virtual event organized by the Economic Club of New York. "But that's not been decided by the committee."

Fed officials will gather more data on employment and inflation and come to a conclusion on tapering at their November policy meeting, he said. (Reporting by Jonnelle Marte Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)
