"Passione Italiana: The Art of Espresso" Exhibit Opens at MODA

This Sunday, coffee and design will converge at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) for the opening of the "Passione Italiana: The Art of Espresso." From the home to the café, the exhibit will offer a glimpse into the technology behind the brewing process, as well as the influence of various designers, including Aldo Rossi and Massimiliano Fuksas.

"We're proud to partner with MODA on this exhibit,” says Gene Kansas, founder of Constellations, a workspace partnering with MODA for Passione Italiana. “Their experiential approach to design, and thoughtful programming, are true benefits to the members and guests, and to our city.”

One particularly striking piece in the exhibit is the La Pavoni “Modello Concorso” lever espresso machine, designed by Bruno Munari and Enzo Mari and released in 1956. An intricate mix of gold and silver adorn the machine, which reportedly took its cue from the architecture of Gio Ponti.

“This one gives me an Art Deco vibe,” Atlanta-based interior stylist, Marie Magloire says of the Alessandro Mendini cafetiere on display. “In this kitchen, we drink coffee with our pinkies up. The colors used are rich tones: deep blues, hunter greens, and mustard yellows.”

Despite the intricacy of Passione Italiana’s espresso machines, the exhibit also includes several coffee sets. Cups, saucers, and pots serve as a pop of color and a retro spark to the collection, like the Circolo Colore Coffee Set by Marcello Morandini.

“This is fun and oddly satisfying at the same time,” Magloire adds. “Although this screams ‘80s, the color gives me a mood for a bold-colored bright, modern kitchen, with this coffeemaker being the center of attention.”
