The past year for Sify Technologies (NASDAQ:SIFY) investors has not been profitable

In this article:

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ:SIFY) share price up 13% in a single quarter. But that isn't much consolation to those who have suffered through the declines of the last year. During that time the share price has sank like a stone, descending 58%. The share price recovery is not so impressive when you consider the fall. Arguably, the fall was overdone.

Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Unfortunately Sify Technologies reported an EPS drop of 47% for the last year. We note that the 58% share price drop is very close to the EPS drop. Therefore one could posit that the market has not become more concerned about the company, despite the lower EPS. Instead, the change in the share price seems to reduction in earnings per share, alone.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 13% in the twelve months, Sify Technologies shareholders did even worse, losing 58%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 7% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Sify Technologies better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
