The past three years for GSI Technology (NASDAQ:GSIT) investors has not been profitable

In this article:

Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term GSI Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:GSIT) shareholders. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 67% drop in the share price over that period. Furthermore, it's down 55% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

Because GSI Technology made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last three years GSI Technology saw its revenue shrink by 1.8% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. With revenue in decline, and profit but a dream, we can understand why the share price has been declining at 19% per year. Having said that, if growth is coming in the future, now may be the low ebb for the company. We don't generally like to own companies that lose money and can't grow revenues. But any company is worth looking at when it makes a maiden profit.

A Different Perspective

GSI Technology shareholders gained a total return of 7.9% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 10% per year, over five years. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
