Penumbra, Inc. Beat Analyst Estimates: See What The Consensus Is Forecasting For This Year

In this article:

It's been a mediocre week for Penumbra, Inc. (NYSE:PEN) shareholders, with the stock dropping 12% to US$238 in the week since its latest yearly results. It looks like a credible result overall - although revenues of US$1.1b were what the analysts expected, Penumbra surprised by delivering a (statutory) profit of US$2.32 per share, an impressive 25% above what was forecast. Following the result, the analysts have updated their earnings model, and it would be good to know whether they think there's been a strong change in the company's prospects, or if it's business as usual. So we collected the latest post-earnings statutory consensus estimates to see what could be in store for next year.

Taking into account the latest results, the current consensus from Penumbra's 15 analysts is for revenues of US$1.25b in 2024. This would reflect a decent 18% increase on its revenue over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are predicted to leap 21% to US$2.85. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been anticipated revenues of US$1.27b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$2.79 in 2024. So it's pretty clear that, although the analysts have updated their estimates, there's been no major change in expectations for the business following the latest results.

It will come as no surprise then, to learn that the consensus price target is largely unchanged at US$281. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. The most optimistic Penumbra analyst has a price target of US$320 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$240. With such a narrow range of valuations, the analysts apparently share similar views on what they think the business is worth.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. The period to the end of 2024 brings more of the same, according to the analysts, with revenue forecast to display 18% growth on an annualised basis. That is in line with its 17% annual growth over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to see their revenues grow 7.8% per year. So although Penumbra is expected to maintain its revenue growth rate, it's definitely expected to grow faster than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that there's been no major change in sentiment, with the analysts reconfirming that the business is performing in line with their previous earnings per share estimates. Happily, there were no major changes to revenue forecasts, with the business still expected to grow faster than the wider industry. The consensus price target held steady at US$281, with the latest estimates not enough to have an impact on their price targets.

Following on from that line of thought, we think that the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. We have forecasts for Penumbra going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
