ProPhase Labs' (NASDAQ:PRPH) investors will be pleased with their enviable 352% return over the last three years

In this article:

ProPhase Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRPH) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 23% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been very strong. In three years the stock price has launched 297% higher: a great result. After a run like that some may not be surprised to see prices moderate. The fundamental business performance will ultimately dictate whether the top is in, or if this is a stellar buying opportunity.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During three years of share price growth, ProPhase Labs moved from a loss to profitability. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of ProPhase Labs, it has a TSR of 352% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that ProPhase Labs has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 5.8% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 36% per year, is even more impressive. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand ProPhase Labs better, we need to consider many other factors.
