Protesters unfurl 'Stop Killing Us' banner during Cardinals game

Protesters delivered their message loud and clear during Friday’s Cardinals-Brewers game at Busch Stadium, unfurling a banner from the upper deck that read “Stop Killing Us!”

The demonstration is the latest in a string of protests throughout St. Louis following the acquittal of a white police officer in the shooting death of a black suspect.

The banner included a rendition of the Cardinals’ mascot Fredbird, whose jersey read “#ExpectUs” where the lettering on the Cardinals typically is. The mascot is holding a sign that reads “Racism Lives Here.”

The group was peacefully removed from the stadium shortly after the protest. The banner was later spotted outside Busch Stadium, where protesters remain and chants of “no justice, no baseball” have echoed throughout the night.

The protest comes two weeks after anti-racist demonstrators in Boston draped a “Racism is as American as baseball” banner over the Green Monster at Fenway Park.

St. Louis Police have set up guardrails to separate protesters from fans when they leave the ballpark. There have been no reports of violence or arrests, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but police will be prepared.

The game continued uninterrupted, with the Brewers eventually winning 5-3.
