For Alex Rodriguez, champion baseball player, practice makes perfect. Especially when it comes to proposing to fiancée Jennifer Lopez.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show, Rodriguez revealed to Jimmy Fallon that he went over his Bahamas engagement plan not once, not twice, but three times. His reason? To time it exactly with the sunset.

“I planned it for about six months,” he said. “What was interesting was the three days prior to me going down on one knee and getting engaged, I rehearsed three days in a row because I wanted the sunset to be perfect.”

So, along with his assistant Ashley, Rodriguez went to the beach and watched the horizon. (You proposed to your assistant three times? Fallon asked. “Yeah,” Rodriguez replied, laughing.)

On one day, the sunset was at 6:27, the next, it was at 6:29, and the third day, it was raining. He decided to settle on 6:29 as the magic time. “I said, this is the time I’m going to do it.”

And boy, was he correct. The Instagram announcing their engagement is pretty picture-perfect, from Rodriguez’s boyish grin to Lopez’s surprised gasp, all illuminated by the warm glow of the sky behind them. Yes, he timed the moment to take place during scenic and photographic nirvana: golden hour, that short time just around sunset where light is evenly diffused, shadows are less apparent, and colors are enhanced (do you see the blue of that water?).

Even Jimmy Fallon agrees: on the show, he held up a framed photograph to the audience. “Just perfect,” he exclaimed. “That is gorgeous.”

And if that was the engagement, just imagine what the wedding will be like.
