The most likely replacement for Matt Lauer is Willie Geist. Giest is already serving as a co-host over at Sunday Today. He has also hosted the Today show before when Lauer isn’t available. These qualities make him a strong replacement now that Lauer is gone.

Another candidate that could take over the Today show from Matt Lauer is Craig Melvin. He is the weekend host for Today and would likely be able to move into the weekday version of the show easily. Megyn Kelly is another person that may become the next Today show host. She’s a recent hire and its unlikely she will, but the possibility is there, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Anderson Cooper is another name on the list of candidates who may replace Matt Lauer. Rumors back in 2013 claimed he would take over the position from Lauer then, but an NBC executive said at the time it was sticking with Lauer for several years.

The following is a list of other possible candidates that may take over as the host of the Today show now that Matt Lauer is gone.

  • Ann Curry

  • Tamron Hall

  • Carson Daly

  • Katie Couric

  • Al Roker

  • Keith Olbermann

Matt Lauer was officially fired from the Today show on Wednesday following a sexual harassment claim made on Monday. This was the first complaint made against Lauer, but the network says it has reason to believe it wasn’t the first event of its type.
