Report: Jim Caldwell to be fired as Lions head coach after season finale

The Detroit Lions are expected to fire head coach Jim Caldwell after Sunday’s season finale against the Green Bay Packers, NFL Network reports.

The Lions sit in second place in the NFC North at 8-7, but were eliminated from the playoffs after last week’s defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s a disappointing result for Detroit, which failed to improve on a 9-7 playoff season last year.

The Lions are 35-28 under Caldwell through four seasons. In addition to last year’s playoff appearance, Detroit made the playoffs in 2014 with an 11-5 record. The Lions lost both times in the wild-card round.

Detroit failed to capitalize on an opportunity in the division this season when Aaron Rodgers’ shoulder injury knocked the Green Bay Packers out of contention, despite having Matthew Stafford in his prime.

Watching the Minnesota Vikings run away with the NFC North with their No. 3 quarterback likely proved to too much for Caldwell to survive.
