The Round Rock City Council approved $136,000 in contracts for design of new fire station.

The Round Rock City Council on Thursday night approved two contracts to move forward with designs for a new Fire Station 1.

The station will be at 1730 E. Old Settlers Boulevard and will house one battalion chief and a fire crew of three to four firefighters, said Chad McDowell, director of general services.

The station is expected to cost $10 million and to be completed by 2024. The design of the station will be funded through the city's general self financed construction fund. Construction of the station will be funded through certificates of obligation, city staff said.

Personnel from the Central Fire Station at 203 Commerce Boulevard will be moved to the new station. The Central Fire Station will continue to serve for administrative functions for the Fire Department staff, such as the chief's office, the fire marshal's office and the city's emergency operations center.

The new station is expected to help better distribute response times across the city, focusing on improving response times in the eastern portion of the community, officials said.

The city has two other fire stations. Station 2 at 200 W. Bagdad Avenue covers the downtown district and central Round Rock. Station 3 at 221 Sundance Parkway covers the southwestern portion of the city, including La Frontera.

The city on Thursday also approved a $50,000 contract with McKinney York Architects for architectural services and an a $86,000 engineering contract with 2P Consultants, according to city documents.

"I want to thank (McKinney York Architects and 2P Consultants) for investing in this city." McDowell said

Under the contract, McKinney York will update the station's plan to add a fourth vehicle bay, redesign the HVAC system and roof. The contract with 2P Consultants include site layout, grading and drainage design, utility design, erosion control and permitting and platting.

"We are trying to make this station last a lifetime," McDowell said.

The City Council also approved a $194,460 budget amendment to create and fund a Round Rock Community Enhancement Team to help keep the city clean.

The team will conduct trash and debris pickup, eradicate weeds and trim tree limbs around the city, officials said. The amendment creates two new positions to lead the team.

The budget amendment requires two readings, and final approval will go before council at a later meeting.
