Serena Williams Wore Koala Nail Art at the Australian Open
Serena Williams is many things. An athlete. A mother. An icon. Potentially the owner of Qai Qai's social media accounts. The GOAT. On January 22, she continued to show us why she's an all-around amazing person by wearing koala nail art to the 2020 Australian Open to continue to raise awareness about the ongoing bushfires.

Environmental experts estimate that almost 30% of the koala population in New South Wales has been decimated since the bushfires began, which has raised concerns over whether the koala bear could end up extinct. In early January, Serena shared a post on Instagram that included a photo of a koala and information about where her followers could donate.
"I am heartbroken over the devastation of the wildfires in Australia," she wrote at the time. "With the loss of over 500 million animals and many people left without their homes, we need to act now to help in whatever way we can. I have been going to Australia for over 20 years so this devastation is hitting me particularly hard."
Serena brought another tribute to the koalas to the court at the Australian Open, with a modern French manicure in a coffin shape. The accent nail is where we see the koala, donning a cute little red bow. Each nail is a different pastel shade and has a series of rhinestones outlining where the pastel polish ends and the nude polish begins.
This nail art is not an empty gesture from the athlete either. Following her win at the ASB Classic in New Zealand on January 11, she announced that she would be donating the $43,000 tournament winnings to relief efforts. Serena and other tennis players, including Roger Federer and Naomi Osaka, played in an exhibition match on January 15th where all funds raised were donated to relief efforts.
