When it comes to mattresses, there's one company you can expect will never fall asleep on the job—Serta, who makes some of the best mattresses we've ever put through our testing labs. Recently, the brand announced its new eco-friendly mattress, the Serta iComfortECO, meant to be the brand's entrance into the world of sustainable sleep. Here's what you need to know.

About the Serta iComfortECO mattress

The Serta iComfortECO Quilted Hybrid is the most popular.

We haven't yet tested the Serta iComfortECO mattress, so we can't speak from hands-on experience, but we can take a deep dive into the mattress's specifications and how it compares to previous Serta models we've tested.

It's made with sustainability in mind.

The Serta iComfortECO is the brand's first foray into sustainable bedding, and they're fighting against the two most popular eco-friendly mattresses out there—Avocado and Awara. Serta claims the iComfortECO is made from 70% sustainable materials, including Terra Fusion Memory Foam (made from 30% plant-based material) and coils made from 85% recycled steel.

While Serta claims a high sustainability factor in the construction of the iComfortECO, the mattress doesn't yet have any certifications from leading environmental agencies. Avocado, for example, boasts a number of certifications from GOTS, GOLS, GreenGuard and FSC, who have verified the mattress is made from certified sustainable materials. Serta may not have any certifications yet, but that may just be because the mattress is too new to the market.

As far as pricing, eco-friendly mattresses tend to be a bit more expensive than traditional mattresses. For a queen, the Serta iComfortECO starts at $1,599, which is cheaper than other eco-friendly mattresses we've tested. The Avocado Green Mattress queen starts at $1,999, while the Awara Natural Hybrid starts at $1,898.

It claims to be cooling.

Each Serta iComfortECO mattress features a CoolTemp Cover powered by Repreve, which the brand claims is "cool to the touch" and made from recycled plastic bottles.

We haven't tested this exact construction yet, but we did test the Serta Arctic Mattress—and found that it was the best cooling mattress we've ever tried. The Arctic is made from a different cooling material—Reactex—that provides its impressive cooling capabilities.

While the two mattresses are made from different materials, we can vouch for the cooling capabilities that Serta mattresses are capable of providing. We're curious to see if the Repreve system is as effective as the Reactix one.

It's available in three styles.

Serta's new sustainable mattress comes in three different configurations: foam, hybrid and quilted hybrid. While the mattresses are still young, it appears based on customer reviews the quilted hybrid is the most popular among shoppers. Here's the difference between the three.

iComfortECO Foam—$1,599 (queen)

The iComfortECO Foam is made from Terra Fusion memory foam, which Serta claims is made from 30% plant-based material and provides pressure relief. The best memory foam mattresses relieve motion transfer and mold to your body—Serta claims the foam version of the iComfortECO does just that. It starts at $1,599 for a queen version.

iComfortECO Smooth Hybrid—$1,999 (queen)

Hybrid mattresses feature that same top layer of memory foam, but feature a layer of coils underneath that provide better airflow and cooling. If you sleep hot, we recommend hunting for a hybrid mattress. The iComfortECO Smooth Hybrid is a little more expensive—the queen is $1,999—but it features a "5-Zone Support System" that provides more support and pressure relief.

iComfortECO Quilted Hybrid—$1,599 (queen)

Like the Smooth Hybrid, the iComfortECO Quilted Hybrid combines coils and memory foam, but it doesn't feature the five-zone support system. As a result, it's about $400 cheaper, costing $1,599 for the queen. According to reviewers, this model is the most popular, combining the pressure relief, motion transfer and cooling capabilities sleepers love.
