Sex Education creator shot an alternate season 2 ending

Sex Education fans were left a little bit frustrated at the end of the second season, as they were deprived of a romantic moment between Otis and Maeve.

The two lead characters seem destined to be together, but keep being pulled apart. In the closing scene of season 2, Otis (Asa Butterfield) left a voicemail confessing his love for Maeve (Emma Mackey), only for Issac (George Robinson) – who also has feelings for her – to delete the message.

That's the ending fans got... but director Ben Taylor has now revealed that he did shoot an alternate scene when filming the finale.

Speaking to BT TV, he said: "I shot a thing just to see. Just to be naughty, because occasionally I can be.

In the other ending, he told the two actors: "Otis act like you've just seen Maeve. Maeve, act like you've just seen Otis," adding that viewers would have seen both characters with smiles on their faces.

Despite acknowledging fans' frustration with the ending they got, Taylor still believes it was the right route for the writers to take.

"I think shoes will be thrown at screens – in a good way," he said. I love being pissed off at stuff. You think you want it, but you don't.

"I think about it all the time, because you want [the show] to be satisfying and nourishing and all the right things. They don't get it [in the ending], but five minutes before on screen, Eric gets a moment with Adam which for me is one of the greatest romantic gestures.

"[Eric and Adam] get it. They get their moment. But if you go around and give everyone their moment it may get a bit sugary.

"The people that were the most pissed off were Emma and Asa... they just really want the closure for their characters. But you're not going to get that yet."

Sex Education seasons one and two are available to watch on Netflix.
