After sitting out the entire season, Texas guard Kyndall Hunter enters the transfer portal

Texas guard Kyndall Hunter will not return to the Longhorns' women's basketball program.

One day after reports surfaced about her intention to enter the transfer portal, the sophomore confirmed the news on Tuesday. In a post published on her Twitter and Instagram profiles, she announced that "I will continue to move forward and find a university and coaching staff who believes in me and will nurture me as a basketball player on the court but even more, instill confidence in me off the court."

Hunter also wished her now-former UT teammates well in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Several Longhorns, including Rori Harmon and Shay Holle, reciprocated those well wishes on Instagram.

Hunter's decision to move on is hardly a surprise. She has been away from the team for the entire season for what head coach Vic Schaefer described as a private matter. In her transfer announcement, Hunter thanked UT athletic director Chris Del Conte for allowing her to keep her scholarship while she "navigated through the decision-making process pertaining to my future."

Hunter was kept on Texas' online roster all season. As of Tuesday afternoon, her name and photo had been removed.

A high school teammate of Harmon, Hunter was regarded as a top-25 recruit in 2021. In her first game at Texas, she knocked down seven of the eight 3-pointers she attempted.

But Hunter struggled to find consistent playing time under Schaefer. As a freshman, she averaged 3.0 points and 8.1 minutes over the 21 games she appeared in.

With the loss of Hunter, Texas will eventually head into its offseason with one less name on its backcourt's depth chart. Harmon, Holle, Shaylee Gonzales and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda are all eligible to return next season, and freshmen Jordana Codio and Gisella Maul will make their UT debuts after rehabbing knee injuries this winter. Sarah Graves joined the team as a walk-on this season.

On Saturday, Texas (25-9) will host East Carolina (23-9) in a first-round tournament game at Moody Center.
