Solo Brands (NYSE:DTC shareholders incur further losses as stock declines 12% this week, taking one-year losses to 24%

Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. That downside risk was realized by Solo Brands, Inc. (NYSE:DTC) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 24%. That's disappointing when you consider the market declined 0.8%. Solo Brands hasn't been listed for long, so although we're wary of recent listings that perform poorly, it may still prove itself with time. The last month has also been disappointing, with the stock slipping a further 44%.

Because Solo Brands made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Solo Brands grew its revenue by 26% over the last year. We think that is pretty nice growth. Unfortunately that wasn't good enough to stop the share price dropping 24%. This implies the market was expecting better growth. However, that's in the past now, and it's the future that matters most.

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. A Different Perspective

Given that the market gained 0.8% in the last year, Solo Brands shareholders might be miffed that they lost 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Putting aside the last twelve months, it's good to see the share price has rebounded by 0.7%, in the last ninety days. This could just be a bounce because the selling was too aggressive, but fingers crossed it's the start of a new trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
