Two state championship finalists. Four teams with South Jersey titles. Nine South Jersey sectional finalists. That’s a powerful group of teams sitting atop the standings of South Jersey high school girls school basketball.

Still, one team stood above all others from opening day until the final whistle blew.

The Paul VI Eagles followed up last year’s No. 1 ranking with a repeat as the Courier Post No. 1 team in South Jersey.

Led by junior guard Hannah Hidalgo and senior forward Sarah McShea and coached by first-year high school coach Orlando Hidalgo, the Eagles lost to two New Jersey state champions and two Christian prep schools. Against South Jersey NJSIAA schools, Paul VI won 16 games in 16 tries, including wins over No. 2 Mainland, No. 3 Cherokee, No. 5 Camden Catholic (twice) and No. 6 Lenape.

Paul VI finished with a 24-4 record losing to eventual Tournament of Champions winner St. John Vianney in the South Jersey Non-Public A final.

South Jersey Group 3 champion Mainland and S.J. Group 4 champ Cherokee ended their seasons with state championship game losses on March 13.

S.J. Group 2 champion Haddon Heights was No. 8. S.J. Group 1 champion Wildwood finished as the No. 10 team in South Jersey.
