As the economy has suffered from a pandemic, supply chain problems and skyrocketing inflation, the federal government has stepped in multiple times to help Americans through a variety of relief initiatives, including stimulus checks, tax rebates, debt relief and other programs.

According to a recent GOBankingRates survey, 62% of Americans would still like to see more stimulus money in 2023. Because, while the pandemic lockdowns that led to economic hardship may be over, financial woes for many Americans are not.

Unfortunately, the programs that brought much of this relief have mostly come to an end, though some programs have approved payments from 2022 that will continue to roll out into 2023. It’s also possible that if the American economy slides into recession as some experts predict, Congress will act again to pass other kinds of relief — though it’s no guarantee.

Regardless, on the East Coast, several states have some kind of stimulus that will extend from 2022 into 2023 in some form or another. Not all of this stimulus comes from bills passed by the federal government — some are rebates or surplus tax refunds that states are passing along to its residents. Read on to find out which eastern states offer some stimulus in 2023.

Delaware: Relief Rebate Program

Resident adults 18 and older, who filed income taxes in 2021, may have been eligible in Delaware for a one-time payment of $300 through Delaware’s Relief Rebate Program. Those who applied earlier in 2022 should have received their checks in May or June, but those who applied as late as December 31 may see their checks arriving sometime in 2023 from the Delaware Department of Finance.

Massachusetts: Surplus Tax Refunds

Massachusetts experienced a $3 billion surplus in 2022, and decided to divide that money up to its residents in the form of tax refunds (Chapter 62F, formally). Anyone who filed in 2022 should have received their refund already, but residents who file their taxes on or before September 15, 2023 are still eligible and should receive their funds within a month after filing, but no later than September 2023.

New Jersey: ANCHOR Program

New Jersey residents can still take advantage of property tax refunds through the Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) program. Homeowners are eligible for $1,000 or $1,500, while renters can receive up to $450. The deadline for 2023 filing is January 31, 2023. Applications for the ANCHOR program need to be filed with the state’s Division of Taxation.

Pennsylvania: Property Tax Rebate

Pennsylvania has an ongoing program since 1971 that benefits seniors, which is still in effect. They send out a refund of property taxes or rent paid for seniors. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but those eligible for supplemental rebates can receive up to $975.

The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 a year for renters, though half of Social Security income is excluded. To get funds, an application is required, and it must be filed with the state’s Department of Revenue by Dec. 31, 2023.

Virginia: Bonus Tax Refunds

Virginia sent eligible taxpayers $250 ($500 for joint filers) in the form of one-time bonus tax refunds. While most checks were mailed out in September, for those who filed at the later end of the application window, it is possible that some checks may still be making their way out in early 2023.

Remember: even if your state doesn’t appear to be passing on any further stimulus payments at the moment, if the economy slides into recession, there’s always a chance that could change.
