Strong week for NexPoint Real Estate Finance (NYSE:NREF) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of one-year loss

NexPoint Real Estate Finance, Inc. (NYSE:NREF) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 12% in the last week. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. In fact, the price has declined 36% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

While the stock has risen 12% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year NexPoint Real Estate Finance saw its earnings per share drop below zero. Some investors no doubt dumped the stock as a result. Of course, if the company can turn the situation around, investors will likely profit.
