'Supergirl' First Look: Mehcad Brooks's James Olsen Morphs Into Guardian

Supergirl‘s James Olsen is getting in on the superhero action, and we’ve got a first look at his indestructible getup.

As we previously reported, Mehcad Brooks’ character is going to try his hand at crimefighting later this season when he adopts the persona of DC Comics’ shield-toting Guardian.

“James is going to decide that he can no longer be a sidekick, so he’s going to become a vigilante,” EP Andrew Kreisberg explained to TVLine. “He’s going to become Guardian, complete with the shield, which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara because he decides not to tell her. There’s this new masked vigilante, and she has her own feelings about vigilantes. … And he’s recruited Winn to help him. Winn is his man in the van. Winn and James together is like comedy gold.”

Supergirl made a splash in its new CW home on Monday, kicking off its second season with 3 million viewers and a 1.1 18-49 demo rating, up triple digits compared to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s performance in the Monday timeslot last fall. It was The CW’s most-watched show in the Monday-at-8 pm perch in nearly eight years (since a 2008 Gossip Girl episode) and best 18-49 rating in six years (since a 2010 90210 episode).
