TF Green closes secondary runway for construction

TF Green airport begins improvement project, closes secondary runway

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) -- T.F. Green Airport has begun implementing a four-year improvement plan that will include the expansion of its main runway.

The airport on Monday closed its secondary runway, where it will install new safety buffers designed to stop planes that overshoot the landing strip.

The $250 million in improvements also include a new collection system to keep deicing solution from seeping into local ground water, and voluntary soundproofing for local homes and businesses.

The work to expand the main runway by 1,500 feet is expected to take place in 2016 and 2017.

Officials say closing the secondary runway should not impact flight schedules at the airport.
