Things Look Grim For MediWound Ltd. (NASDAQ:MDWD) After Today's Downgrade

In this article:

One thing we could say about the analysts on MediWound Ltd. (NASDAQ:MDWD) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon. Surprisingly the share price has been buoyant, rising 14% to US$2.10 in the past 7 days. With such a sharp increase, it seems brokers may have seen something that is not yet being priced in by the wider market.

Following the downgrade, the consensus from six analysts covering MediWound is for revenues of US$18m in 2022, implying a chunky 12% decline in sales compared to the last 12 months. The loss per share is expected to ameliorate slightly, reducing to US$0.44. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$21m and US$0.37 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

There was no major change to the consensus price target of US$6.00, signalling that the business is performing roughly in line with expectations, despite lower earnings per share forecasts. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. There are some variant perceptions on MediWound, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$8.00 and the most bearish at US$2.00 per share. This is a fairly broad spread of estimates, suggesting that the analysts are forecasting a wide range of possible outcomes for the business.

One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 23% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2022. That is a notable change from historical growth of 34% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 3.5% annually for the foreseeable future. It's pretty clear that MediWound's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that MediWound's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. The lack of change in the price target is puzzling in light of the downgrade but, with a serious decline expected this year, we wouldn't be surprised if investors were a bit wary of MediWound.

There might be good reason for analyst bearishness towards MediWound, like a short cash runway. For more information, you can click here to discover this and the 3 other warning signs we've identified.
