  • Chris Hemsworth has made 8 appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor, but his latest, in Avengers: Endgame, was quite different from the last.

  • He played Fat Thor, or, Lebowski Thor, in the movie.

  • Director Taika Waititi teased that he could appear in a similar fashion in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Chris Hemsworth has made eight appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universes as Thor, but it's the most recent one—when he became Fat Thor, or "Lebowski Thor,"— that he really proved that he's willing to take his character to whatever possible length to continue being fresh with each succeeding appearance. Fans probably assumed that this, well, bigger version of Thor was only a one-off appearance, but director Taika Waititi said in a recent interview that he just might be bringing Endgame's version of Thor back for his next adventure, Thor: Love and Thunder.

"This is an ongoing debate that we're still having at Marvel,” Waititi said in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment (h/t SyFy), after revealing that he's already written the movie's story. “‘Cause we're trying to figure out how long—how many months or years—this is after Endgame; at what point does this take place?”

Hemsworth has proven in the last few years that not only is he one of the film industry's foremost action stars, but also a brilliant comedic presence as well, showcasing his affinity for merging the two in his Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame appearances as the God of Thunder (he was also very funny in appearances in Ghostbusters, Vacation, and hosting Saturday Night Live)

Perhaps the most unexpected of those appearances was in Endgame, when Thor, after a time jump, had experienced a sizable weight gain and was going through a bout of post-loss depression. Hemsworth has embraced this version of the character, revealing that he fought to keep the weight gain for the duration of the movie, had a blast playing him that way, and even recorded an in-character Johnny Cash/Nine Inch Nails cover during his down time.

Joe and Anthony Russo—the directors of Endgame—told Men's Health the origin of the 'Lebowski' nickname for Thor in an interview earlier this year. "We would refer to him at times, as the character, as Lebowski, internally, as a joke," Joe said, before revealing that Robert Downey Jr. dropped the nickname on-camera as an improvisation. "It’s really funny, and I’m sure that Downey was thinking of that when he threw that out there."

While it's not sure in what form Thor will be returning, it's a big relief for MCU fans to know that he will be returning one way or another. Thor: Love and Thunder will be released on November 5, 2021.
