Three more suspects arrested in shooting of David Ortiz, one still at-large

The list of suspects possibly involved in a botched hit on David Ortiz is getting longer.

Three more people have been arrested in connection with the shooting, according to the Dominican Republic's National Prosecutor's Office, via ABC News. Lanny Estefanny Pérez Reyes, José Eduardo Ciprián, and Carlos Rafael Álvarez were taken into custody on Thursday night.

Ciprián and Álvarez are currently serving time for other offenses, and it’s not clear how they may be involved in the shooting or the alleged plot behind it. According to ABC News, all three will be charged with attempted murder, criminal association and illegal possession of weapons.

There is one suspect that the police haven’t tracked down yet: Luis Alfredo Riva Clases, known as “The Surgeon.” He’s still at-large, and he’s also wanted for an April 2018 attempted homicide in Reading, Pennsylvania.

According to CBS News, the suspected shooter, Ramón Martínez Perez (who also goes by Rolfi Ferreira-Cruz), has claimed that Ortiz was not his intended target. He said that he only had the color of the target’s clothes to go on, and didn’t initially realize who he had shot.

The shooting happened on Sunday night at a club near Ortiz’s hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Ortiz was shot in the back, and the bullet exited through his stomach. He underwent emergency surgery and was later airlifted to Boston courtesy of the Boston Red Sox team plane. He underwent additional surgery in Boston to remove his gallbladder and parts of his intestines and colon.

Ortiz’s doctors have said that they expect the retired slugger to make a full recovery, and he’s already showing signs of improvement. He took his first post-surgery steps on Tuesday, and his daughter, Alexandria, said in a heartfelt Instagram message that her father hasn’t complained once.
