U.S. Senate leader Schumer blasts McConnell for "shameless" opposition to debt ceiling hike

WASHINGTON, July 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday attacked his Republican counterpart, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for announcing opposition to a debt limit increase, saying "Americans pay their debts."

With U.S. borrowing authority technically expiring on July 31, Schumer said McConnell's statement was "shameless, cynical and totally political. This debt is Trump debt, it's COVID debt." Schumer added, "Americans pay their debts." (Reporting by Richard Cowan Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)
