Ukraine cuts ties with Syria - Ukraines Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Quote: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly condemns the decision of the Syrian Arab Republic to recognize the so-called ‘independence’ of the temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts...

In response to this unfriendly act, Ukraine declares the breaking off of diplomatic relations with Syria without the breaking off of consular relations, in accordance with Article 2 of the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

The Ukrainian side is also initiating the procedure of imposing a trade embargo on Syria, as well as imposing other sanctions on Syrian legal entities and individuals."

Details: The Ukrainian ministry believes that Syria is trying to give pseudo-subjectivity to these quasi-formations at the request of its curators in the Kremlin.

Ukraine sees this decision as an unfriendly act, an encroachment on sovereignty and territorial integrity, a gross violation of Ukrainian law, the UN Charter and the fundamental norms and principles of international law.

Previously: On Wednesday, the Syrian state agency SANA, citing an official source in the country's Foreign Ministry, reported that Syria had decided to recognise the "independence" of Moscow-controlled pseudo-republics "DPR" [self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic] and "LPR" [self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic] on the Ukrainian territories.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine will not have any relations with Syria after it recognized the Russian-controlled pseudo-republics "DPR" and "LPR" in Donbas.

Background:

  • Due to the crimes of the regime of Bashar Assad against the Syrian people, the Ukrainian side closed the Ukrainian embassy in Damascus in 2016, and in 2018 Ukraine ordered to close the Syrian embassy in Kyiv. The Ukrainian embassy in Lebanon protects the interests of Ukrainians in Syria.
