Unum: 2Q Earnings Snapshot

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) _ Unum Group (UNM) on Monday reported second-quarter earnings of $285.5 million.

On a per-share basis, the Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company said it had profit of $1.29. Earnings, adjusted for investment costs, came to $1.30 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.27 per share.

The insurance company posted revenue of $2.89 billion in the period, which fell short of Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.91 billion.

Unum shares have declined 28 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen roughly 5 percent. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $39.33, a fall of 21 percent in the last 12 months.
