US Indexes Close Higher Monday
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,703.38 on Monday with a gain of 68.50 points or 0.24%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,246.28 for a gain of 11.43 points or 0.35%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 9,071.46 for a gain of 50.70 points or 0.56%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.54 for a loss of 0.48 points or -3.42%.
Monday's market movers
U.S. indexes rebounded from Friday's losses, caused mostly by conflicts in the Middle East. Over the weekend, the Iraqi Parliament voted to expel U.S. troops after a missile strike killed an Iranian military leader. Iran also said it will no longer comply with nuclear enrichment levels. President Donald Trump followed with threats of sanctions for Iraq.
In the S&P 500, energy stocks led gains Monday, with oil prices climbing to new highs. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

The Markit Composite PMI increased to 52.7 in December from 52.0.
The Markit Services PMI increased to 52.8 in December from 51.6.
