US Market Indexes Continue Losses on China Tariff Uncertainty

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,965.09 on Tuesday with a loss of 473.39 points or -1.79%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,884.05 for a loss of 48.42 points or -1.65%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,963.76 for a loss of 159.53 points or -1.96%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 19.32 for a gain of 3.88 points or 25.13%.

Tuesday's market movers


U.S. market indexes closed lower for a second day after headlines reported that the U.S. could likely bypass a China trade resolution and implement new tariffs on Chinese imports. The U.S. and China will continue negotiations on Thursday with a new tariff announcement now expected on Friday.

Treasury prices continued to rise on Tuesday with higher safe haven demand. The 30-year Treasury bond's price increased 26/32 with a yield of 2.859%.

Economic reports affecting marketing trading on Tuesday included the following:

  • The Commerce Department's JOLTS report, which measures job openings in the U.S., increased to 7.488 million in March, up from 7.142 million and above the estimated 7.2 million.

  • The Federal Reserve's Consumer Credit report showed consumer credit increasing by $10.28 billion in March, below the estimate of $15 billion.

  • The Treasury held an auction for three-year notes at a rate of 2.248%.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses

  • Boeing (BA) -3.87%

  • United Technologies (UTX) -3.40%

  • Apple (AAPL) -2.70%

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,582.31 for a loss of 32.66 points or -2.02%. The S&P 600 closed at 971.02 for a loss of 18.30 points or -1.85%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,045.76 for a loss of 206.67 points or -2.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,757.77 for a loss of 161.78 points or -1.63%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,938.62 for a loss of 38.20 points or -1.93%; the S&P 100 at 1,278.76 for a loss of 21.68 points or -1.67%; the Russell 3000 at 1,701.83 for a loss of 29.39 points or -1.70%; the Russell 1000 at 1,598.40 for a loss of 27.19 points or -1.67%; the Wilshire 5000 at 29,837.12 for a loss of 506.58 points or -1.67%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 709.63 for a loss of 7.65 points or -1.07%.
