Women's World Cup Du Jour: Sam Kerr scores all the goals, Marta and Group C make history

Italy had been on a roll since their opening win over Australia, and all they needed to win Group C was a win or a draw. Both teams played a tense yet even game, and until the 74th minute, a draw was still very much on the table. But then Marta happened. She converted a penalty kick to give Brazil a 1-0 lead, and then kissed her own foot in celebration.
The great Marta made history twice on Tuesday. She scored her record 17th World Cup goal, making her the all-time leader for men and women. And that goal gave Brazil the win and caused a three-way tie in Group C. It’s the first time in World Cup history that three teams finished evenly with six points.
Brazil’s 1-0 win on Tuesday was crucial, but a couple extra goals would have been nice. With Australia’s 4-1 win over Jamaica, both teams tied on six points, but Brazil lands in third place due to the third tiebreaker, total goals scored. That means they’ll have to face either France or Germany when the knockout stage begins, which is a tough draw either way it goes.

Sam Kerr, Australia
Could it be anyone but Sam Kerr? She scored four times against Jamaica on Tuesday, meaning she was responsible for every Australia goal. She scored the first two with her head:

Kerr may have gone off, and Marta may have made World Cup history, but that can’t compare with Havana Solaun scoring Jamaica’s first Women’s World Cup goal ever:

Jamaica’s soccer program has been through a lot, and even though they’re headed home, they not only scored a goal but stayed competitive with Australia throughout the entire match. That’s a different kind of win.
