It looks like Marvel's Venom is snapping up another major name to join its cast: Woody Harrelson.

The actor's exact role hasn't been revealed as yet, but according to Variety, he's in line to play a henchman of sorts.

Harrelson was last seen playing the villain in this past summer's War for the Planet of the Apes, and recently finished shooting the part of Han Solo's mentor in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

He knows Venom director Ruben Fleischer well, having appeared in his breakout hit Zombieland.

Venom – from Sony's Marvel Universe of characters but not a Spider-Man spinoff – will star Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate.

One of Spider-Man's most popular characters, Venom made his big-screen debut in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 (as played by Topher Grace), but has been in the comics ever since 1988. Also known as a photographer named Eddie Brock, he becomes Venom when bonded with an alien Symbiote.

Throughout the history of Marvel Comics, Venom has also appeared alongside Iron Man, Deadpool and Hulk among others.

Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) will write the script for the Venom movie.

Tom Hardy recently revealed that it will be based on the Lethal Protector comic book series, and added that it will be set in San Francisco and will be 'important to the Marvel universe' as a whole.

Venom is due out in cinemas on October 5, 2018.
