Stocks were mixed on Wednesday morning after reaching record levels on Tuesday. On the employment front, first-time claims for state unemployment benefits rose to 778,000 for the week ended November 21, up from 748,000 a week earlier and above the Bloomberg consensus forecast of 730,000. Core capital goods orders excluding aircraft rose 0.7% in October, down from 1.9% in September but above the consensus forecast of 0.5% growth. The Dow fell 0.6%, the S&P fell 0.3%, and the Nasdaq rose 0.1%. Crude oil traded near $45 per barrel, while gold rose $5 to $1809 per ounce.

The S&P 500, S&P MidCap 400 and Russell 2000 (IWM) hit all-time highs (ATHs) last week, while the Nasdaq Composite and the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) lagged behind. Strange times indeed. The Energy (XLE) sector was the market leader last week, soaring 17%. Year-to-date, the XLE is still at the bottom of the sector heap, down 41% -- so there is still a lot of work to do. In second place last week, Financials (XLF) jumped 8.3%. The XLF is still down 10.4% for the year and remains the second-worst YTD performer.

The 3Q20 EPS season is mostly in the record books, with retailers the last group to report. The results were not pretty, but were better than 2Q20. Through mid-November, Refinitiv reported that S&P 500 earnings declined in 3Q at a 7.4% rate -- a vast improvement from the prior quarter's 30.5% decline. Excluding the Energy sector, earnings declined at a 3.2% rate. Of the 462 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date for 20Q3, 84% have reported earnings above analyst expectations. This compares to a long-term average of 65% and prior four-quarter average of 73%. Our analysts are always looking for companies that raise their outlooks during earnings season. Management's ability to "raise guidance" can often be a catalyst to strong returns in the quarters ahead. There were not many in this most-recent period. As earnings season moves towards completion, the volume of insider transactions is returning to normal, lending increased significance to the proprietary sentiment indicators from Vickers Stock Research. For three consecutive weeks during the heart of earnings, insiders turned bearish in a manner that exceeded the norm for that time on the calendar. During the bearish turn, the DJIA moved from 28,586 (close on 10/12/20) down to 26,501 (close on 11/2/20). Insiders then became bullish -- and one week later, the DJIA was back up to 28,323 (close on 11/6/20). So what gives this week?

Sustainable Impact Investing is gaining traction not only with Argus Research clients, but also with the global investment community. In January, BlackRock CEO Lawrence Fink, who oversees approximately $7 trillion in assets, announced that his firm would be investing in companies that are making progress on sustainability. In the trading week that ended on October 30, the stock market had its most serious stumble since the early weeks of the pandemic. Earnings and economic news was generally positive, including the record 33% recovery in 3Q20 GDP. But the combination of sharply rising COVID-19 cases and prospects for an inconclusive and contested election spooked investors heading into Halloween.

Textron is a conglomerate that designs, manufactures, and services specialty aircraft for various end markets, but the company also has several unrelated businesses. The firm’s aviation segment manufactures and services Cessna and Beechcraft business aircraft. Bell is a helicopter manufacturer and servicer for both the commercial and military end market. Textron Systems produces uncrewed aircraft, armored vehicles for the military market as well as aircraft simulators for the commercial and military end market. Textron Industrial contains a Kautex business that manufactures plastic fuel tanks for conventional and hybrid motor vehicles and produces specialized vehicles such as golf carts, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and others.

Our rating on the Communication Services sector is Over-Weight. While existing pressures on the sector continue, including assaults by regulators on social media companies and intense competition among telecom companies, these concerns have been superseded by COVID-19. In this "barbell" sector, telco giants Verizon and AT&T are now apparent islands of relative stability and secure income. Simultaneously, internet giants Alphabet and Facebook are acting as forums for community concerns about the coronavirus. The style mix of the sector is approximately one-third "value" and two-thirds "growth." The adjusted pro-forma beta is approximately 1.0 (like the old Telecoms), while the yield is 0.9% (reflecting the impact of Google and Facebook). The smoothed growth rate is 7% and the P/E ratio is 21-times. The sector accounts for 11% of the S&P 500. We think investors should consider allocating 12%- 14% of their diversified Portfolios to the sector. Here are some of our top picks.

Stocks rose on Thursday, rebounding from Wednesday's selloff but also giving up some of their gains late in the session. The Commerce Department reported strong growth in 3Q GDP, which rose at a better-than-expected 33.1% annualized rate. Unemployment claims, still high by historical standards, also trended lower. First-time unemployment benefit claims fell from the prior week to 751,000, below the consensus forecast. Continuing claims totaled 7.756 million, also down from the prior week and below consensus. The Dow rose 0.52%, the S&P 1.19%, and the Nasdaq 1.64%. Crude oil fell more than 3% to $36 per barrel, while gold fell $13 to $1866 per ounce.

Stocks rose on Thursday morning, recovering some of their losses after Wednesday's sharp selloff. GDP data was strong. The Commerce Department said that the U.S. economy expanded at a 33.1% annualized rate in the third quarter, a reversal from the 2Q decline of 31.4%. The reading was also above the Bloomberg consensus forecast of 32.0%. On the employment front, the Labor Department said that initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell to 751,000 for the week ended October 24, down from 791,000 a week earlier and below the Bloomberg consensus forecast of 770,000. The Dow rose 0.4%, the S&P 1.0%, and the Nasdaq 1.5%. Crude oil fell more than 3% to $36 per barrel, while gold fell $8 to $1872 per ounce.

In the past few weeks, the S&P 500 has drifted down from its October closing high of 3,534 on 10/12/20, hit an end-of-day low of 3,427 on 10/19/20, and worked back up to 3,465 at the close on October 23. The market is down about 2% from that mid-October high but still up 3% for the month, coming off September's 4% decline.
