Everyone is wondering when the Federal Reserve will start to wind down its asset-purchase program -- but few are discussing U.S. debt levels, which have grown over the past 10 years. Total U.S. debt is now more than 125% of GDP, according to the Office of Management & the Budget. This is the highest level since World War II. In the 1970s and 1980s, the debt/GDP ratio was in the 30%-40% range, and moved up toward the 60% level by 2000. The debt level soared around 2010, as the government spent aggressively to halt the Great Recession and rekindle growth. (According to Keynes, that's what the government is supposed to do). Still, despite more than 10 years of economic growth prior to the pandemic, debt only increased as a percentage of GDP. And now, in light of the fiscal spending to fight the impact of COVID-19, debt levels have surged. This is not a problem that has to be fixed today. After all, interest rates are low on an historical basis and policies to change the trajectory (less spending, more taxes) could push the economy back into decline. But politicians should start to establish a plan to address the issue in the next 10-15 years. If the problem is not solved, the situation could result in hyperinflation and a weak dollar, which would send interest rates higher and cut into equity valuations.

The Technology sector started slowly in 2021 as investors focused on value stocks. Trying to Get to Normal: Our Monthly Survey of the Economy, Interest Rates, and Markets

The overall volume of insider transactions remains light due to trading restrictions in place during earnings season, but there are some interesting trends in the current data from Vickers Stock Research. And those trends are positive.

The dog days of summer may be perfect for a vacation at the beach, but investors don't always get to enjoy the month of August. Indeed, our analysis of monthly returns going back to 1980 indicates that August is ahead of only one other month -- September -- in terms of average return. Yes, there have been some hits. The month has a "win percentage" of 55%, and last year the S&P 500 increased 7.3% in August. But there have been some clunkers as well, including 1981 (-6%), 1990 (-9.4%), 1998 (-14.6%), 2001 (-6.4%) and 2015 (-6.3%). August is generally a quiet month on Wall Street. The second-quarter earnings reports are mostly finished in July; the IPO market often goes into a period of hibernation; and volume tends to be light -- which is perfect for higher volatility. This August, volatility is likely to remain high as new variants of COVID-19 challenge the nation's health while the Federal Reserve debates upcoming policy changes. We continue to recommend a focus on quality (strong earnings, balance sheets and management teams) as the markets approach what typically has been a difficult two-month stretch.

The stock market was flat to down last week as positive earnings surprises proved to be baked-in. Tech stocks modestly underperformed blue chips. During Friday's session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 149 points, or 0.42%. The S&P 500 was down 0.54%, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.71%. For the week, the DJIA was down 126 points, or 0.36%, the S&P 500 was down 0.37%, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 1.11%. Year-to-date, the DJIA is up 14.14%, the S&P 500 is up 17.02%, and the Nasdaq Composite is up 13.85%.

Stocks fell on Friday morning amid earnings from a range of major companies and new consumer spending data. The Commerce Department said that U.S. consumer spending rose 1.0% in June, up from a 0.1% decline in May and above the Reuters consensus forecast calling for 0.7% growth. The core personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE) rose 3.5% from the prior year in June, up from 3.4% in May but below the consensus forecast of 3.7%. Amazon shares fell more than 7%, despite strong earnings, on weaker-than-expected 2Q revenue and disappointing sales guidance for the current third quarter. The Dow fell 0.4%, the S&P 0.6%, and the Nasdaq 0.8%. Crude oil traded near $74 per barrel, while gold fell $11 to $1825 per ounce.
