For the month of May, the S&P 500 managed to eke out a 0.6% gain; the Nasdaq made a nice comeback, cutting its loss to 1.5%; the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) dropped 1.2%; the S&P 400 rose 0.2%; and the Russell 2000 (IWM) rose 0.3%. Once again, action was seen in all 11 S&P sectors as well as in individual names.

Data from Vickers Stock Research continues to reflect rambling sentiment among corporate insiders, in many ways matching the tone of the overall stock market. While that may seem to be an uncompelling statement, corporate executives, directors and beneficial owners are not usually in lockstep with the broader investing community. The typically sell more often than they buy, they sell earlier than many other investors as stocks are rising, and they buy earlier than many other investors when stocks are falling. So when they are behaving <MM>just like everyone else,<MM> we notice.

Stocks rose on Thursday morning after three days of losses, led by the Technology and Consumer Discretionary sectors. On the employment front, the Labor Department said that first-time claims for state unemployment benefits fell to 444,000 for the week ended May 15, down from 478,000 a week earlier and slightly below the Bloomberg consensus of 450,000. The Dow rose 0.6%, the S&P 0.8%, and the Nasdaq 1.4%. Crude oil fell to $63 per barrel, while gold traded near $1879 per ounce.

Stocks kept the momentum going in April, and are now up almost 12%, including dividends, in the year-to-date. Our analysts have been progressing through earnings season, and have come across many stocks in coverage that have approached target prices. We set target prices through our valuation framework, which includes analysis of historical multiples, peer multiples, future dividends, and cash flows. After adjusting the models for the latest earnings and dividend information -- most of which has been good -- here are some of the stocks on which we have raised target prices over the past month. Stocks were largely flat on Wednesday morning as investors weighed mixed earnings reports and awaited the Federal Reserve's policy announcement this afternoon. Boeing shares fell following a wider-than-expected first-quarter loss, though the company also reported a strong increase in aircraft deliveries. Microsoft shares also fell despite better-than-expected sales and earnings. The Dow fell 0.3%, the S&P rose 0.1%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.2%. Crude oil traded near $64 per barrel, while gold fell $6 to $1773 per ounce.

With April winding down, you can count on someone, somewhere saying, 'sell in May and go away.' That pronouncement is mainly popular because it rhymes. While it is true that summer is typically a period of relative underperformance, market timing rarely works. And sometimes summer is a good time for stock performance.

The stock market moved lower last week, then rallied on Friday, ultimately finishing flat-to-down. Tech stocks and blue chips performed similarly, with tech narrowly outperforming. During Friday's session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 228 points, or 0.67%. The S&P 500 was up 1.09%, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 1.44%. For the week, the DJIA was down 0.46%, the S&P 500 was up 0.13%, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.25%. Year-to-date, the DJIA is up 11.23%, the S&P 500 is up 11.29%, and the Nasdaq Composite is up 8.76%.

Stock prices, as expressed by the S&P 500, are near all-time highs. Further, on depressed earnings, stocks are well above fair value, which our model pegs at closer to 3500 due to the weak pandemic-influenced EPS in 2020. Our stock market valuation model takes into account factors such as stock prices, five-year normalized earnings (three historical years, two forward-looking), GDP, inflation, and T-bond and T-bill yields. We note that stocks rarely trade right at fair value. Since 1960, on average, the index has traded at a tight 2% above fair value, but the standard deviation to the mean is 16%. As such, we normally expect the S&P 500 to trade between 14% undervalued and 18% overvalued. At current prices, the stock market is almost 30% above fair value, implying that investors are quite optimistic about equities. Though we are bullish on the economy, earnings and market recoveries, we'd feel better about the longer-term outlook for stocks if valuations were not so stretched. Several factors could improve valuations: a pullback in stock prices; lower bond yields; or better earnings, which we expect in upcoming quarters.

Stocks continued their overall strong trend in a week that saw the launch of the biggest crypto exchange (Coinbase) and finished with modest but across-the-board gains. Also notable in the stock week just ended was the resurgence in growth sectors that had previously taken a back seat to cyclical and defensive areas of the market.
