Earnings, Fedspeak, inflation & housing data: What to watch

Friday February 16 is set to be another busy day on Wall Street.

On the earnings front, TC Energy (TRP), Vulcan Materials (VMC), and Cinemark Holdings (CNK) are just a handful of companies set to issue their quarterly reports.

There will also be Fedspeak for investors to digest, with San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly and Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr both set to speak.

When it comes to economic data, housing will be in focus with the January read on housing starts and building permits. There will also be more inflation data when the Producer Price Index data is released. Economists will also get a new read on the consumer thanks to the preliminary February consumer sentiment report.

JOSH LIPTON: What to watch Friday, February 16, starting off on the earnings front, TC Energy, Vulcan Materials, health care, Realty, US Cellular, and Cinemark, all reporting tomorrow. Cinemark still struggling to recover from the pandemic. But shares of the movie theater chain up about 17% to start the year, showing signs that the box office might be poised for a comeback in 2024.

JULIE HYMAN: Taking a look at the Fed, we're expecting another round of commentary from Federal reserve officials. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly and Fed vice chair for Supervision Michael Barr both speaking tomorrow. And this coming after hotter-than-expected inflation in January. And Barr saying yesterday that a path back to 2%, quote, "may be a bumpy one."

JOSH LIPTON: And moving over to economic data, new numbers for housing starts and building permits from the Census Bureau out tomorrow. Housing starts ticking up and-- ticking up and building permits down slightly. And we'll also get a reading on wholesale inflation. The producer price index coming out after the hot CPI reading earlier this week.
