Gay Pride 101

You might know that June is LGBT Pride Month in more than 90 cities across the country and many other around the world. But why? The generally accepted kickoff of what was once called "gay liberation" was in late June of 1969 in NYC. That’s when the now-famous Stonewall Riots occurred, resisting oppressive, anti-gay police tactics at the Stonewall Inn. The protests culminated with rally, calling for equal rights for LGBT people. The following year, in 1970, there was an anniversary rally and then, every year after.
