Ice Stacks and Fissures on Lake in Utah Captured in Mesmerizing Drone Footage

Bear Lake, a 109-square-mile freshwater lake straddling the Utah-Idaho border, was a frozen wonderland on February 29, its surface marbled with gorgeous fissures and shattered ice sheets stacked along its shores, drone footage shows.

Drone pilot Justin McFarland, who recorded the footage of the lake’s Utah side, said the ice stacks gather along Bear Lake’s ice fissures and beaches. He told Storyful, “wind, waves, or expansion from more freezing water on the lake” pushes the ice toward the shoreline.

According to McFarland, “some of the ice stacks in this clip are up to six feet high.” Credit: Justin McFarland via Storyful
