- All right, recessions are when McDonald's really thrives. As you can see in our chart of the day from Baird, the Golden Arches saw average quarterly same-store sales gains of 5.4% during the 2008-2009 recession, as people sought out ways to save money. Nothing says budget watching and-- than like buying some chicken nuggets to the drive-thru and the dollar menu.
