S&P 500 notches new record high, stocks close in green

The S&P 500 (^GSPC) closes Thursday at yet another record high in 2024. The Nasdaq (^IXIC) falls just short of a new high. All in all, the three stock market indices — including the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) — end the day in the green.

Yahoo Finance's Jared Blikre gives his analysis on the record high runs seen across sectors and specific indexes.

JULIE HYMAN: Let's see where the major averages ended up. Here the Dow up about 130 points on the day. 38,791 is where we end.

The S&P 500, did we make it to a record? Yes, we did. A sort of slow climb throughout the day.

Here up 1% when all was said and done. 5,157 surpassing the previous high. And the NASDAQ composite as well up 1.5%.

Do we make it to a record there? No, we didn't. Unless the numbers change a little bit more in the last few moments. 16,274.94 just shy of that.

But still rally coming back here in the tech land. Jared, what are you watching?

JARED BLIKRE: Well, I'm to tracking a bunch of record highs here on the Wi-Fi interactive. Not the least of which is the chip index. That's the Philly chip index up in the upper left, up 3.36%.

And then homebuilders, that has been making record highs since last year. Got the NASDAQ 100. Got the S&P 500. S&P 500 equal weight. It's been three years. But it is back.

Here's a five-year chart. You can see finally accelerating beyond those 2022 record highs in January. We also have transportation.

We also have defense and aerospace. We also have gold. So here's gold accelerating to the upside.

But since we're sticking with stocks today, just want to check in on the sector action real quick. Rounding things out only financials in the red. Communication services and tech were the big leaders. Materials also outperforming, Josh.
