Pelosi requests National Guard to clear, secure Capitol Hill: NYT

Yahoo Finance's Jessica Smith joined Yahoo Finance Live to break down the latest DC updates as pro-Trump rioters clash with police in the capitol.

Video Transcript

SEANA SMITH: OK, I'm taking a look at the market's reaction like Alexis was just alluding to a couple of minutes ago. It's kind of remarkable that we aren't seeing a bigger reaction here in the markets. The Dow is still up just around 449 points, as of right now, the S&P holding onto gains, up just around 8/10 of a percent. The NASDAQ, though, is in the red. The NASDAQ though, has been the underperformer for most of the day as we have seen big tech under pressure. We have the NASDAQ off just around 3/10 of a percent.

But Adam, like you are saying, really, what we are seeing play out on Capitol Hill right now, is a very, very chaotic scene. You can see some of the video there on our screen right now. The Capitol building is on lockdown. This, of course, coming amid the pro-President Trump protests. The Senate has been evacuated, the protesters storming the Capitol building during the certification of the election results. The Senate is not deliberating right now. They have been evacuated.

So we of course, are going to continue to monitor this situation, and for that, we want to bring in Jessica Smith who, of course, is following the latest on these protests for us. Jess?

JESSICA SMITH: Yes, Seana, it is just chaos at the Capitol right now. We know that protesters have made their way from the Capitol complex where we've been seeing them all day, actually, to the Capitol. They have gone inside the Capitol, and now they are inside the Senate chambers. Lawmakers had-- lawmakers have been evacuated from the House and Senate chambers, taken to a safe location. But again, protesters have made their way inside. Lawmakers and other reporters who are at the Capitol have said there is tear gas in the Capitol. Again, not sure where that is coming from, but there's tear gas in the Capitol, glass has been broken in the chamber, at the door there is what pool reports are saying.

We're trying to figure out exactly what is happening right now, because this is also fluid. But we know as they were voting earlier this afternoon, as they were debating-- excuse me, Vice President Pence was rushed out, and now lawmakers have been taken out as well. We are seeing lots of different reports of just chaos to the Capitol. So we're going to have to keep an eye on this and see what else is happening. As soon as we get more information, more updates, we'll be sure to let you know.

ADAM SHAPIRO: Jessica, there have been several tweets from key personnel. We know that the president attacked Vice President Pence. Do you have that tweet and what the president said? And then the follow-up tweet where the president alleges to call for peace, or for at least peaceful protests?

JESSICA SMITH: Yeah, I don't have that tweet in front of me of President Trump talking about Vice President Pence, but he did express his disappointment that Pence said he would not try to overturn the results of the election, that he would just be the moderator, essentially, of the vote and the debate today. But then we did see President Trump just a few minutes ago urging people to to stay peaceful as you see this chaos erupt at the capitol.
