Its residential collection operations comprise the curbside collection of refuse from small containers into collection vehicles for transport to transfer stations, or directly to landfills or recycling centers; and commercial and industrial collection operations include supplying waste containers, renting compactors to large waste generators, and collecting containers or compacted waste and transport the waste to landfill for disposal. The company is also involved in the collection, processing, and sale of old corrugated cardboard, old newspaper, aluminum, glass, and other materials. As of December 31, 2012, it owned and operated 332 collection operations, 195 transfer stations, 191 active solid waste landfills, and 71 recycling centers in 38 states and Puerto Rico. The company also operates 69 landfill gas and renewable energy projects. Republic Services, Inc. was founded in 1996 and is based in Phoenix, Arizona.
