Jacksonville-based tanker company Patriot Transportation Holding Inc. (PATI) posted second-quarter earnings of 26 cents per share, up from a significant 11 cent loss per share for the same period last year, but still managed to miss on revenue. Total revenue for the quarter was $29 million, down $689,000 year over year. "It's not what we like," said CEO Tom Baker on a conference call, "but we've shown improvement over our first quarter results and we expect more improvement." Compensation and benefit costs increased $979,000, or 9.1 cents per mile, driven by the decision in the second quarter to begin growing the driver count in excess of current demands to be positioned for opportunities that would arise during the spring and summer.

The owner of a large development site near MacDill Air Force Base is listing the property for sale with the hopes of profiting on a hot real estate market. Patriot Transportation, based in Jacksonville, has retained managing director Jan Boltres and industrial specialist John Jackson of Colliers International Tampa Bay to market a 25.5-acre site at 6604 South Dale Mabry Highway. The property is currently home to a truck terminal for Florida Rock & Tank Lines Inc. That facility takes up 5 acres, and Patriot would relocate it if a deal came to fruition, said Matt McNulty, director of corporate development.
