New Life Mission to mark 15th anniversary with community luncheon

New Life Mission, a nonprofit focused on assisting homeless women with children on the Space Coast, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with an annual Community Care & Share Luncheon fundraiser on April 18 and 19 at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place.

Guests are invited to attend either 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 18 (Thursday) or 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 19 (Friday), and can register by emailing CCS@NewLife-Mission.org. There is no cost to attend, and guests will be asked to donate.

During the luncheon, attendees will learn about the history of New Life Mission, formerly Brevard Rescue Mission, and the impact the organization has had on transforming the lives of homeless women with children during the last 15 years. They also will learn about upcoming campus tours, volunteer opportunities and other ways to become involved.

“Our mission started in 2009 with a few apartment units, and, today, we have four campuses in Melbourne with capacity to serve 30 families in our program and another eight in affordable graduate housing,” New Life’s CEO Amy Lyon said. “It’s incredible to watch a mom go from living in her car to working a full-time job with a livable wage and providing for her family.”

New Life Mission opened its fourth campus, New Life Village, last spring on the site of the former Hacienda Girls Ranch in Melbourne. The expansion not only opened the door to serve more families, but also prompted the organization to launch its own full-time child care center called Kids Academy and expand the Transformed Shop sewing center.

“It takes a village to keep our doors open, and community support is the lifeblood of our organization,” Lyon said. “We are always looking for individuals and groups to help in our Kids Academy, in our Transformed Shop and with our facilities team.”

While in the program, families live at one of New Life Mission’s four campuses for one to two years while they receive one-on-one case management, mental health counseling, financial coaching, life skills classes, and educational and career guidance.

Upon successful completion of the program, they have the opportunity to apply for affordable graduate housing.

Steele served as county commissioner, representing District 3 from 1970 to 1984.

The event also included dedication of a plaque memorializing the former commissioner.

The plaque In memory of Val M. Steele (1941-2020) reads:

"This park commemorates Val M. Steele’s lifelong dedication to public service and community improvement. Steele represented Melbourne Beach as councilman, mayor and county commissioner, and was on the St. Johns River Water Management Governing Board.

"His impactful contributions include relocating the main courthouse to Viera and founding Spessard Holland Golf Course. He was also instrumental in helping establish the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. Steele made significant marks in the real estate, banking and hospital sectors, and was founder of several local organizations.

"Steele’s enduring legacy is his commitment to preserving our natural heritage and fostering community growth. This park, a serene oasis of natural beauty, stands as tribute to his visionary leadership. We honor Val M. Steele for unwavering dedication to community service and for the indelible impact he has left on Brevard County."

Steele is the brother of District 5 County Commissioner and current County Commission Chair Jason Steele.

Space Coast Credit Union events promote financial, professional literacy

Space Coast Credit Union has been promoting financial and professional literacy in Florida’s youth by donating and volunteering to support Junior Achievement during its Junior Achievement in a Day (JA in a Day), completing its latest program on March 22 at Quest Elementary School in Viera.

About 80 SCCU staff members volunteered their time and talent to help instill essential financial knowledge and career insights in more than 720 elementary school students throughout this nearly five-hour event.

Additionally, the credit union donated a variety of goods and school supplies to each student, including pencils, erasers, cups and banks.

“Our team members are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of the incredible communities we serve every day,” said Timothy M. Antonition, president and CEO of Space Coast Credit Union. “It's a privilege to know that what we accomplish with Junior Achievement today will benefit the workforce of tomorrow.”

This comes as an extension of SCCU’s longstanding dedication to supporting Junior Achievement. On Nov. 16, the credit union sponsored a JA Stock Market Challenge competition, introducing middle and high school students to the basic concepts, risks and benefits of the stock market and investing.

Additionally, 46 SCCU team members volunteered during Junior Achievement’s November BizTown Takeover event in Coconut Creek.

Space Coast Credit Union has allocated thousands of volunteer hours, goods, supplies and nearly $10,000 through donations and sponsorships to Junior Achievement in the past year alone. Looking ahead, SCCU will continue to support Junior Achievement as a sponsor of its April 13 JA Gala.

Space Coast Credit Union is state-chartered, with headquarters in Melbourne since 1951. With over $9 billion in assets, SCCU serves more than 651,000 members in 34 counties, with 65 branches along Florida’s east coast.
