I have held this a long time, finally paying off. Seems like a great business model, the 20-30 crowd move every couple years

3Q cash flow was $215MM vs $176MM. They run the biz for tax savings. DEPN was way up with new equipment and storage facilities. 9month Cash Flow was $952MM. They are adding a lot of storage facilities. Stock is selling at about 8x cash flow. Pretty cheap.

When giving my months notice, my landlord said that things are going pretty well with filling houses that people are still moving. I was surprised. When house hunting my realtor said that prices in Oregon haven't really gone down, that they have stayed the same or gone up. She said "If you think about it people are going to move despite whats going on, that people have already made decisions based at the end of last school season, and work related jobs." is what she said.

Insider buying on February 11th. Edward & Mark Shoen. Each purchased 3,000 shares @ $347.82. Yes, just over a million dollar purchase.

UHAL is a family company that is managed for cash flow not for paying income tax. 2Q reported cash flow up 7.2% vs Q1 3%. The depreciation charges zoomed up with the large storage property investments. At some poiunt thye will be spun off into a REIT. Why is it down 8.6%? Because some computer is selling I guess.

Anybody have any insights or advise on this stock? UHAL
Looks like a great time to buy and a great head start to recession proof a portfolio.
Barrons in December said it was one best kept secrets out there.
Only one major analyst covers it and soon it will watched carefully.
Thanks for your direction on this.

Peter Lynch, Buffet and others say that you're best investing in businesses you know and like from experience. Having said that, I had a hardware store with a UHaul business as a side line. I can tell you a few negatives that prevent me from investing in the company stock - notwithstanding the recent Barron's article featuring it as one of the top picks for 2020. Compared to their competitors - Penske, Budget Truck Rental to name two - UHaul's fleet is o-l-d. I turned down a few trucks they wanted to station at my store as they were in poor condition - over 186,000 miles on one - and projected a poor image of UHaul and I wasn't about to park either of those out in front of my business. The other companies seem to rotate their fleet much more quickly. More than a handful of times I was embarrassed to walk a customer out to the truck they just rented. Beside the age of their fleet, many sideline dealers like myself move in and out of partnering with them - the money just isn't there and many find the profit doesn't warrant the hassle - checking in and out the vehicles, spending a half-hour on reservations, etc. How much is the dealer commission on a $14.95 in-town trailer rental? Try about $3. For that you have to spend 20 minutes keying in customer info - drivers lic./towing vehicle, hitch type, etc and half the time you have to help the customer hook it up and unhook it when they return. The only time you actually make money is on long-distance one-way truck rentals - sometimes you could make $200-$300 on a move from the Midwest to say Florida. So, I'll take Peter and Warren's advice and just take a pass on this best buy.

From personal experience as an outside Uhaul service provider, July is the busiest time of the year when most trucks needed to be serviced. I think their second quarter and 3rd quarter will be surprisingly positive.

New owners of this stock do not get it. cash flow is what matters not e.p.s. Depreciation was up due to more units in service, cash flow was also up. Relax.
