Argus has derived a model of the size and scope of the global AI industry, based on our coverage of the major publicly-traded players and most of the mid-tier players, along with our industry analysts' knowledge of private players. So far this year, the Dow is up about 2%, the S&P is higher by around 8%, and the Nasdaq is up some 15%. That has caught the attention of investors who suffered through a very difficult 2022. Also so far this year, insider sentiment, gleaned from weekly data compiled by Vickers Stock Research, had not offered any indication that stock prices were out over their skis. But the most recent data from Vickers has caught our attention, and suggests a little consolidation may be in order.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil (WTI) popped back to $92.83/barrel on Monday after pulling back to $87.46 on Friday, as the Russian/Ukraine situation remains volatile. If higher interest rates and the prospect of war overseas is not enough for the stock market, higher prices for gasoline, heating oil, and natural gas are certainly weighing on some low- to middle-income consumers. It's ironic that as the pandemic seems to be winding down, stock markets have "bigger" worries to consider.

On the earnings front, Chipotle Mexican Grill rose nearly 9% following strong 4Q results, while CVS Health fell 5%, despite a solid fourth quarter, after offering disappointing guidance for 2022. The Dow rose 0.8%, the S&P 1.2%, and the Nasdaq 1.5%. Crude oil traded near $90 per barrel, while gold rose $5 to $1833 per ounce.

Tuesday was another ugly day for the stock market, and for January 2022. The S&P 500 gave up 1.8%, the Nasdaq got whacked for 2.6%, the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) declined 2.5%, the S&P MidCap 400 fell 2.1%, and the Russell 2000 (IWM) got smacked for 3%. The Dow Industrials fell 1.5% and the NYSE Composite dropped 1.6%, as both of these indices continue to hold up better than the rest.

The Commerce Department said that U.S. factory orders rose 1.6% in November, up from 1.2% in October and above the Reuters consensus forecast of 1.5%. On the employment front, first-time claims for state unemployment benefits rose to 207,000 for the week ended January 1, up from 200,000 a week earlier and above the consensus forecast of 195,000. The Dow fell 0.3%, the S&P was flat, and the Nasdaq rose 0.2%. Crude oil rose more than 2% to near $80 per barrel, while gold fell $35 to $1790 per ounce.

Investors wrapped up a quiet final week in 2021 with a modest loss for the S&P 500. But that hardly dented a strong year for stocks, when the S&P 500 climbed almost 27%. The average stock in the Argus Universe of Coverage rose 24% during the quarter, and the median stock advanced 36%. The average BUY-rated stock increased 28%, while the average HOLD-rated stock gained 15%. Will investors continue to favor value in 2021? Will small-caps reverse their recent weak trend? Given low interest rates, we expect growth stocks to resume outperformance over time. Investors seeking value are encouraged to focus on dividends and look for yields in the 3%-4% range. As for small-caps, the promise of the vaccine is encouraging for these companies, which typically don't have the gilt-edged balance sheets of large-caps and are thus more dependent on a strong U.S. economy. Small-cap valuations remain depressed, and this group looks to offer value into 2022.

After an intraday peak on October 25 at $85.41, WTI plunged to $62.43 by December 2. That was a 27% wipeout using intraday data. The entire rally off the August lows was obliterated in less than a month. However, WTI has traced out an ABC reversal and is quickly regaining its 200-day average.

The Commerce Department said that 3Q GDP rose just 2.0%, down from 6.7% in 2Q and below the Reuters consensus of 2.7%. First-time unemployment claims fell to a new pandemic-era low of 281,000, down from 291,000 a week earlier and below the consensus forecast of 288,000. Continuing claims dropped to 2.243 million from 2.480 million a week earlier, and were also below consensus. The Dow rose 0.68%, the S&P 0.98%, and the Nasdaq 1.39%. Crude oil rose to $83 per barrel, while gold rose slightly to $1800 per ounce.
