UAE giant eyes majority stake in Vedanta's Zambian mines in expansion drive

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -The mining investment arm of Abu Dhabi's most valuable company has offered to buy a majority stake in Vedanta Resources' Zambian copper assets, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, in its drive to build an African copper mining empire. The unit of International Holding Company recently made an offer of more than $1 billion to buy a 51% stake in Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) from Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal-owned Vedanta, the sources said. The unit - International Resources Holding (IRH) - is racing to broaden its burgeoning copper mining business in Zambia after buying a 51% stake in Mopani Copper Mines in a deal worth $1.1 billion.

Standard Chartered has picked new regional heads, according to a person with knowledge of the matter, as the Asia-focused bank undergoes a major management reshuffle in its corporate and investment banking business (CIB) business. The new appointments are intended to allow the bank to serve more clients, as well as promote internal talent, the person said. Torry Berntsen was named executive vice-chairman for CIB Europe, Americas, the Middle East & Africa, the person said.

Standard Chartered Kenya is optimistic about the outlook for 2024 due to signs of improving economic fundamentals at home and abroad, its chief executive said on Tuesday, after posting a pretax profit jump for last year. The bank, which is one of the oldest in the East African country, reported a 15% increase in its profit before tax, helped by higher income from loans to customers. Environmental and human rights groups have filed a complaint with a British government mediation body against Standard Chartered over its financing of four coal-fired power plants in the Philippines, the groups told Reuters on Thursday. HONG KONG (Reuters) -Standard Chartered has suspended new investments by its clients in China into offshore products via a quota-based channel, the bank said, amid a surge in demand for overseas investments due to weakness in the local market and currency. The London-headquartered bank, in a statement to Reuters, cited "commercial reasons" as its explanation for the suspension of new investments under the qualified domestic institutional investor (QDII) programme. StanChart's move comes amid Beijing's efforts to stem capital outflows as weaker yuan and a slowing economy have driven savers to move assets offshore.
